Educational Programs for Scouts

The Valentine has a variety of programs and tours to help Scout groups meet badge requirements.

Girl Scouts Program Schedule

Brownie Program: Celebrating Community
Find out about your community by identifing state and local symbols, marching and singing in a parade, and exploring the landmarks of Richmond's Court End neighborhood.
$12 per scout, $5 per adult, includes a badge at the completion of the program.

November 13, 2016, 12:30-2:00 p.m.
Daisy Program: Be A Sister to Every Girl
$11 per scourt, $5 per adult, includes a badge at the completion of the program

December 11, 2016, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Brownie Program: My Family Story (holiday theme)
Share our family stories and learn about holiday traditions and heirlooms as you explore your own family tree.
$12 per scout, $5 per adult,  includes a badge at the completion of the program.

January 22, 2017, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Junior Program: Playing in the Past
Experience life as a girl in the 1800s by becoming one. Learn what everyday life would be like participating in the daily chorse and recreation of a Wickham daughter.
$12 per scout, $5 per adult, includes a badge at the completion of the program.

February 12, 2017, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Junior/Cadette Program: Ladylike: Women from 1820 to 1920
Through the lives of historic women, learn how the manners, qualities and causes of women evolved from 1820 to 1920.
$15 per scout, $2 per adult, includes Valentine pach at the completion of the program.

March 12, 2017, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Cadette Program: Book Artist
What makes a book special? Dissect books and create our own as you explore the techniques of bookbinding and discover our own style.
$14 per scout, $5 per adult, includes a badge at the completion of the program.

May 21, 2017, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Cadette/Senior Program: Textile Arist
Inspired by our extensive Costumes and Textiles collection, learn the baics of textiles and crafting and discover what you can create.
$14 per scout, $5 adult, includes a badge at the completion of the program.

Boy Scouts

American Cultures: Requirement 1: Go to a museum to see a program or exhibit featuring one group’s traditions. (Powhatan Indian program and/or current exhibits)

American Heritage: Requirement 2: Select two individuals from American History (Go Figure: History Makers in Richmond program); Requirement 4: National Register of Historic Places, research, mapping, town history, visit a historic walk (Wickham House tour, various Richmond History Tours)

Architecture: Requirement 1: Tour your community, select an architectural achievement (Greek by Design program , Richmond History Tours –Ancients in Our Neighborhood, Monument Avenue, etc.)

Citizenship in the Community: Requirement 2: Map your community (Richmond History Tours: City Center walk); Requirement 3: Choose one of the issues discussed and choose an opinion (Attend a Community Conversation on a given topic – see website); Requirement 7: Choose a charitable organization (Visit to the Valentine).

Citizenship in the Nation: Requirement 2: Visit a Historic Landmark (The Valentine and/or Wickham House) or tour your state capitol (Richmond History Tours: City Center walk)

Collections: Requirement 3: Demonstrate your knowledge of preserving and displaying your collection (History Mystery program); Requirement 8: Find out about career opportunities in Collecting (Curator tour and discussion at the Valentine. Tour the Valentine once renovations are complete to look at the many collections housed!

Indian Lore: Requirement 1: Give a history of one American Tribe (Powhatan Indians program); Requirement 2: Visit a museum to see Indian artifacts (Visit the Valentine); Requirement 3: Learn three games played by the group or tribe, learn about food preparation, give a demonstration of hunting, fishing (Powhatan Indians program); Requirement 4: The Powhatan program can assist with background for this requirement

Sculpture:Requirement 2: Visit a museum and/or artist’s studio (Visit the Valentine and Edward Valentine Sculpture Studio; Participate in Sculpture programs once renovations are complete!
