Valentine Tour Guides conduct Richmond History Tours that engage a diverse audience in learning about Richmond’s history on walking and bus tours. As ambassadors for the city and the Valentine Museum, Tour Guides are responsible for interpreting Richmond’s history for residents, visitors, students, and private groups, encouraging them to make new discoveries and historical connections through tours of the city’s sites and neighborhoods. Tour Guides work approximately 6-15 hours per month, scheduled as needed, including weekend and evening hours.

ON HOLD: Inventory Technician-Archives

The Inventory Technician will assist with the two-year-long inventorying of the Valentine’s Archives including manuscript collections, ephemera, prints, books and photography. This work will involve description of manuscript collections; inventory of individual objects; data entry in collections management database; digitization; and rehousing. The Inventory Technician position is guaranteed for one year with the opportunity to renew for a second year. The Inventory Technician’s work is conducted in accordance with the museum’s official Collections Management Policy and strict adherence to the American Alliance of Museums Code of Ethics for Museums.

ON HOLD: Museum Technician, Costume and Textiles Collection

Museum Technician will assist the Collections Team with the cataloguing, housing, and preparation of objects for installation in the costume and textiles collection under the direct supervision of the Nathalie L. Klaus Curator of Costume and Textiles. Will inventory specific collections, review object files and enter existing data into database as needed. Will assist with the management of volunteers and interns to communicate and ensure the use of best practices for installation, storage, and collections data entry. Will photograph objects and update database records as needed. Will assist with rehousing the existing collection as needed and with the integration, placement, and documentation of new acquisitions. Will assist with research appointments as needed. This work is conducted in accordance with the museum’s official Collections Management Policy, adhering to the code of ethics advised by the American Association of Museums.

The Adult Programs and Tours Manager has primary responsibility for coordinating adult programs and group visits at the Valentine and Valentine First Freedom Center, the Richmond History Tours program (public and private) and the Valentine Internship Program. The Adult Programs and Tours Manager schedules interactive history adult programs onsite and outreach, college visits, special onsite programs for adult groups. Responsibilities include customer service, staff scheduling (Valentine Educators and Tour Guides), sales and reservations, program development and planning. S/he actively supports the Director of Education and Engagement and the Valentine’s marketing plan while working as an active team member in support of the goals of the Education and Engagement Department.

ON HOLD: Visitor Services Associate (VSA)

Reports to: Visitor Services Manager

The Visitor Services Associate is the first impression for the museum and the museum store. He/she has responsibility for implementing the daily procedures at the front desk.  He/she is a primary source of access and communication within The Valentine. This person answers and directs phone calls or other inquires, processes admissions fees, takes and processes reservations for the public walking and bus tours, conducts sales in the museum store, helps to provide security for The Valentine by issuing badges and keeping logs for visitors to restricted areas, and provides tours of the 1812 Wickham House.  Weekend availability required.
