Richmond Stories from Richmond Kids

In Spring 2020, everyday life in the Richmond Region was interrupted when schools closed as our community prepared to weather the COVID-19 pandemic. Students in the region unexpectedly transitioned to virtual learning and felt their social lives pause as the majority of Americans stayed at home.

The Valentine has asked local students to document and send in their stories, so that we can share share kids’ experiences during this historic period. Explore the thoughts and feelings of young people in Richmond as they weather the COVID-19 pandemic and navigate this uncertain time.

Richmond Stories from Richmond Kids

Thank you, Richmond Students!

March 2020 was the beginning of a historic period for Richmond area students. As the COVID-19 Pandemic closed schools, our city also experienced revolutionary Black Lives Matters protests and the removal of confederate statues from Monument Avenue. As students returned to school in the Fall of 2020 they witnessed a historical Presidential Election, followed by civil and political unrest. For 15 months (March 2020 – June 2021) the Valentine asked students to share their stories with our museum. These journals, blog posts, essays, drawings and pictures created by kids will describe to future generations how life in the Richmond Region changed in the Spring of 2020.
