“Just Add Context”: Design, Art and Richmond’s Monuments

September 17, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Purchase Tickets

Often the conversation around the future of Confederate monuments includes a call to “add context” in order to interpret their meaning. But what does that actually mean? What counts as “context”? And who gets to decide?

Join us for a panel discussion as part of the Valentine’s Monument Avenue: General Demotion/ General Devotion exhibition, as we explore these questions and how design, art and history can inform our understanding of monuments in 21st century Richmond.

Panelists

Madge Bemiss, Architect, Brocade Studio

Valerie Cassel Oliver, Sydney and Francis Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Burt Pinnock, Architect, Baskerville, Storefront for Community Design

Event is free and open to the public, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.
