Join fellow Valentine members for an exclusive Valentine Director-led tour of historic Oakwood Cemetery. Oakwood Cemetery was established in 1854, as the City’s first foray into rural cemetery design, incorporating a park-like setting and scenic paths. The final resting place for an estimated 17,000 Confederate soldiers, Oakwood was the site of the first recorded Memorial Day celebration in Richmond following the Civil War. Today, it is maintained by the City of Richmond as an active cemetery and has grown to 175 acres. We will also visit the adjacent Oakwood Hebrew Cemetery, established in 1866.
