Students explore the identities of enslaved and free African Americans in Richmond from pre-Revolution to post Civil War by examining artifacts and primary sources from the Valentine collection. Notable figures discussed in this program include Henry Box Brown, Maggie Walker and Arthur Ashe.

Program Objectives: Students will work with primary and secondary sources to gain an understanding of the role that African Americans in Richmond played in local, state and national history.
