Monumental

Students will explore monuments as objects of public memory; how are created in our community and how representation and design have changed over time.

In both of these programs, student will discuss the nature of public memory and public art, engaging in critical thinking about how communities commemorate our values using monuments and artwork in our public spaces. These programs can be scheduled individually, or as a pair.

Choose from:

  • Analyzing Lost Cause Monuments & Historic Monument Avenue: Students discuss the nature of public memory and engage in critical thinking related to this timely topic. Students will analyze primary source documents related to the creation of the Lee Monument in Richmond. Program Objectives: The student will demonstrate skills for historical thinking, geographical analysis, economic decision making, and responsible citizenship by analyzing primary and secondary sources and evaluating current events and decisions in Richmond.
  • Monumental: Representation & Design in Richmond’s Landscape: How do monuments get made? What will be the next monument to go up in our city? Students analyze concept ideas from an international competition to reimagine public spaces on Monument Avenue. Program Objectives: Students will demonstrate an understanding how monuments as objects of public memory are created in our community and how representation and design have changed over time.

  • 60 minute onsite program | $5 per student
  • 60 minute outreach program | $5 per student
  • Learning trunks | $60 flat rate per school with delivery within 30 miles of the Valentine
  • Virtual visits | $50 flat rate per program
  • 90 minute walking or bus tour | $75 flat rate
  • Programs are always free for RPS and Title 1 schools. Funding available based on need for other programs upon request.
