Powhatan People












Students will explore the Valentine collection and galleries, engage with primary sources and learn more about the Powhatan people who called the Richmond region home prior to colonization. With hands-on reproduction artifacts, students learn about the Native people of Virginia and their reliance on natural resources. Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas, language groups and geography are discussed and craft is included.

Program Objectives: 

For 2nd Grade – Students will focus on natural resources, the settlement of Europeans and colonization of Virginia. Comparisons will be drawn between Eastern Woodland Tribes and Native Americans from the southwest and plains.

For 4th Grade- Students will focus on the Powhatan Indians as one of three Indian language groups in Virginia, Algonquin (Powhatan), Siouan, and Iroquoian. Discuss the James River, regions of VA (Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Mountains). Identify and locate current state-recognized tribes.
