Historic Cemeteries Walking Tour Series | Shockoe Bottom African, Franklin Street & St. John’s Burial Grounds

Celebrate Memorial Day by joining seasoned Valentine Tour Guide Kathy Whittington for the first in a new series of tours that explore Richmond’s significant historic 18th and 19th century cemeteries. On May 27th, we will begin at the Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground, then caravan to view the nearby Franklin Street Burying Ground, and finally caravan to the burial ground of St. John’s church where we will explore the grounds, monuments and stories of notable tenants.

Tour Notes:

• Advance tickets are required. Tickets are non-refundable.
• We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. Be prepared to caravan to second location.
• Accessibility: People of all abilities are encouraged to join us. If we can do anything to accommodate your needs, please let us know in advance by emailing tours@thevalentine.org.
• Tours are held rain or shine. However, in extreme weather, a tour may be cancelled. Notifications about tour status and cancellation will be sent to registrants via email. You can also call 804-649-0711 x 301 to verify a tour will take place.
