I Know Richmond

Are you passionate about Richmond and curious to learn about the history that shaped the city we know today? Or brand new to Richmond and just want to absorb as much as possible about what’s made your new hometown the vibrant and diverse city that led you here?

Join us for a deep dive into the region’s past with our six-week course I Know Richmond, a class that takes an in-depth look at Richmond stories with particular emphasis on overlooked history and transforming how we represent Richmond today. This immersive experience will not only build a strong foundation in Richmond history, it will also help you draw connections between the Region’s past and present to deepen your understanding of this dynamic region today.

I Know Richmond is offered each fall and spring on Sunday afternoon from 1-5p.m. Classes are led by knowledgeable Valentine staff, and sessions include mix of guest experts, walking tours guides, behind the scenes site visits and museum tours. The first class meets at the Valentine Museum (1015 East Clay Street, Richmond VA 23219). Subsequent classes meet at different historic locations throughout the region.

The Valentine’s I Know Richmond class is open to everyone, and there are no assignments or tests! We just require a natural curiosity and genuine interest in learning more about Richmond’s history. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for those in the tourism industry who want to strengthen their skills and knowledge. Current Richmond tour guides are encouraged!
