ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
CONTEXT
This photograph depicts members of the Pamunkey Tribe presenting their yearly tribute of game to the Governor of Virginia, Harry F. Byrd in 1926. This annual tribute began when Cockacoeske, the weroansqua (chief) of the Pamunkey signed the Treaty of Middle Plantation, which recognized the authority of the Colonial Government and the land use of the Virginia Indians.
